A vision and a passion has been in the works for over a year now, and finally, the Front Porch (The Core's downtown venue) is open to the public! Check out the list of thumbnails to the right for Featured Events, or the submenu above to see Front Porch calendar (for hours or events,) or photos, or to find out how you can help by volunteering or donating. Speaking of which, the Front Porch, to date, has no sugar daddy, so we need your help to keep the lights on! So do your part, ok? No matter how small it is. If you have any questions, e-mail Front Porch Director Christina Wiksell, or call 865-CORE (2673). Here's a run-down of the vision we've got for the Front Porch:
1) A Gathering Place for all those who belong to The Core Community. That's you, by the way, so it's time to get creative. I'll get you started... think Book Clubs, Master Classes, Artist Workshops, Jam Sessions, Support Groups, Birthday Parties, Prayer Gatherings, Candlelight Vigils, Bar Mitzvahs... whatever you can think of that will foster Authentic Community and bring people closer together.
2) A Third Place. If home is your First Place, and work is your Second Place, what is your Third Place? You know, the place where you can be yourself, build friendships, and unwind. The gym? The mall? Starbucks? Probably not. The Front Porch is open most evenings throughout the week, even when there's not an event, so people can just come in and enjoy themselves--and each other--over a free beverage in a relaxed environment. But don't bother unless you're prepared to make new friends with people who are different from you.
3) An Arts & Music Venue. South Avenue needs an all-ages music venue for great bands, a comfortable way to enjoy great art, and a place to show (and discuss) thought-provoking films.
The offerings of the Front Porch's coffee bar are expanding every week, and it's becoming a big hit with the downtown crowd! Here's a look at what we currently offer: (cash or check only, please)

The Front Porch will feature original artwork from local artists in a rotating gallery. There will be something new to view every month, and many works are for sale. If you are a local artist interested in exhibiting your work, please e-mail Amy Scoggins.
Stretching along the south wall of the Front Porch is a lending library containing over 300 titles for you to check out for three weeks at a time. Included are books from various genres: Fiction, Non-Fiction (both Christian and Secular), Reference and Biography.
In addition to the usual deck of cards, the Front Porch keeps several chess boards, Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, a wacky 60s-vintage game called "Tilty", and whatever else you might want to donate to us. But the big draw is our electric-scoring Foosball Table, and our recently installed Nintendo Entertainment System (yes, the original one from the 80s) in excellent condition! If you have any NES cartridges in good shape, bring them by to donate, or just to pop in and play on the big screen! And now, every 2nd Saturday of the month is Game Night, where we whip it all out, and wrap it up with a Foosball Fight to the Finish!
